Important Exterior Maintenance Tips During Spring
Spring is here! The days are getting longer, temperatures will be rising soon, and people are starting to feel happier in general. This time of rebirth presents a great opportunity to renew and renovate and getting your house ready for spring is a big part of that process. Winter weather may have done damage to your house so it’s a good time to inspect your property to make sure you are in good shape for the coming months.
When thinking of possible damage to your home, here are some things you might want to consider:
Roofing: Inspect roofs by climbing on a securely set ladder. If you would rather not make the climb, a pair of binoculars can also come in handy. Look out for curled and missing shingles, rusted and pitted flashing and cracked caulk around pipe collars, skylights and other roof penetrations. These are signs that repairs should be done sooner rather than later.
Siding: Spring is a good time to inspect siding for cracks or breaks. These can leave your house exposed to moisture and mold, adding to repair costs down the line. That’s why its best to have these issues fixed promptly.
Spring is also a great time to clean your siding. Make sure to do so with cleaning solutions that are approved for the siding on your home.
Windows and Doors: Spring is also a great time to inspect windows and doors for costly leaks that can be driving up your energy bills. It is best to inspect your home from both the inside and out, looking for places where the caulking may have failed. If your house has single-paned windows, be on the lookout for damaged glazing, which is the hard putty that hold’s the panes of glass in place.
Also, check for daylight that may be coming through from under the threshold of your doors. These may require insulation as well.
Tree Trimming: Spring is also a great time to do garden maintenance, including trimming trees and shrubbery. Trimming a tree will help keep the tree healthy, keep nesting birds safe and provide a shady canopy for your home that can keep energy prices down. Though some may be able to trim their trees themselves, most will require the service of a tree trimmer to see to it that trees are cut safely and correctly.
